1. Tip of the Month : Simply Ask for a Better Rate

Okay, we all know that this time of year can be slow for hotels but did you know that sometimes better rates are there for the asking. Yup, it’s that simple. Call the hotel directly and ask if there are any specials, check for an Automobile Association rate if you’re a member, or a—heaven-forbid-seniors’ rate if you’re planning a weekend getaway with Mom. If you’ve come up dry, simply ask straight up “Do you have a better rate available?" Don’t beat them up about—they want your bods in their beds and there can be a little wiggle room on rates but not always. If you don’t ask, you don’t get.

2. Featured Topic : Dining Out

If you’re like us, you’ve got a major thing for food and wine, then Dine Out Vancouver, January 16 to February 3, is a huge must-do especially when there are over 180 restaurants to choose from. African? Check. Mandarin? Spanish? Seafood? Italian? Check, check, check. These tasty three-course menus are a penny-pinching $15, $25, or $35 and there are special deals on B.C. wines to keep you properly hydrated. At these prices you can eat, drink, and be very merry.

See www.tourismvancouver.com/visitors/dining/dine_out_vancouver for the restos, mouthwatering menus, and to make reservations. But we’re not done yet. There’ll be a few spare hours in the day to check out one or a few of Edible B.C.’s chef-guided market tours—some with lunch—of Granville Island, Chinatown, or The Drive, Vancouver’s most multi-cultural ‘hood while sussing out the chef’s secret sources and gleaning fab cooking tips www.edible-britishcolumbia.com.

More? Glad you asked. How about Victoria’s Dine Around and Stay in Town, February 21 to March 9? We’re checking into the Best Western Carleton Plaza or Days Inn Victoria on the Harbour—both are offering killer $79 room rates—and taking our pick of lip-smacking three-course menus at 53 fab restos (they’re on line now

at www.tourismvictoria.com/dinearound priced at an appetising $15, $25, or $35. Steals on B.C. wines too. Now if we hit the gym today, indulging will be guilt-free.
